Rippling alternatives: payroll, HR and PEO options with posted prices

The highest-scoring Rippling alternatives are Patriot Software and Gusto, both 69 out of 100 in our October 2026 scores; Gusto, the closer match for a growing team, costs $49 a month plus $6 per person on Simple or $80 plus $12 on Plus, according to its pricing page (checked October 16, 2026). Rippling is quote only: its FAQ says plans start at $8 per employee per month plus a base fee it does not publish.
Which alternative fits depends on the Rippling modules you use. Payroll is easy to replace; device and app management is not.

Rippling's pricing page asks you to contact sales for a custom quote. The only figure it shows is in the FAQ: plans start at $8 per employee per month with a monthly base fee, and the $8 is not tied to a named product. A 10-person team therefore pays at least 10 x $8 = $80 a month before the base fee and before any module beyond the first. Gusto's competitor guide (August 2, 2026) cites a Forbes Advisor quote from January 2026 of $35 a month plus a per-employee fee; treat it as a competitor-reported estimate.
Rippling scores 21 in our payroll ranking mainly because it publishes so little: 3 of 25 points on price and 0 of 15 on contract and exit terms. It does well on reviews (4.5 on Trustpilot from 2,548 reviews, 4.7 on G2 from 14,535, seen October 16, 2026). Eligible venture-backed startups can get Rippling free for six months. Why teams move off Rippling
Rippling's complaints are fewer than Gusto's or ADP's, and they are about cost growth and support depth rather than missed tax filings:
| Reason | How often | What reviewers report |
|---|---|---|
| Bills that are hard to budget | Very common | Eight Capterra reviews from September 2025 to August 2026 describe modular pricing that climbs with every module and every new hire (Capterra, page 6; also Hacker News) |
| Slow help on complex issues | Several | Support handles simple questions but slows down on complicated ones (Capterra, page 6) |
| Only admins reach live support | Several | Employees cannot contact live support themselves; questions go through the admin (Capterra, page 6) |
| State registration left to you | Once | A May 11, 2026 reviewer says they had to register with state agencies on their own (Capterra, page 6) |
| Benefit deduction shown twice | Once | An employer health fund contribution appeared twice (Capterra, Dec 29, 2025) |
Source: Capterra Rippling reviews page 6 and Hacker News, read Oct 16, 2026.
If your bill grew because you added modules you barely use, the fix may be to drop modules rather than leave. If payroll is the only module you rely on, every option below costs a published, fixed amount.
Replace the Rippling piece you actually use
Rippling bundles payroll, HR, benefits, IT and global hiring. No single alternative in our research covers all of it, so price the parts:

| Payroll plus HR and group benefits (PEO) | Justworks PEO Basic or Plus | $79 or $124 per employee | Justworks entities are on the IRS active CPEO list (Aug 7, 2026); Rippling PEO was not found under the Rippling name |
| Employees abroad (employer of record) | Deel, Remote, Oyster | $599; from $599; $699 per employee | Gusto's guide cites Rippling EOR from $499 (pricing as of June 2026) |
| Contractors abroad | Remote, Oyster, Deel | From $29; $29; $49 per contractor | Billed per active contractor |
| IT, devices and app access | None of the payroll providers here | n/a | You would need separate IT tools |

| Rippling (floor only) | $8 x employees + unpublished base | $40 + base | $80 + base | $200 + base |

Sources: provider pricing pages checked Oct 16, 2026. Rippling floor uses the $8 per employee figure from its pricing FAQ; the base fee is not published.
At 25 employees Rippling's floor alone ($200) is above Patriot ($162), Square ($185) and Wave ($190), before the base fee. If you need HR tools too, add OnPay's HR tier ($15 + $2 per worker, so $65 a month at 25 people) and you are at $264 for payroll plus HR. Best picks if you are leaving Rippling
Gusto
The closest everyday match: payroll, contractor payments, benefits administration and time tracking (on Plus) with list prices you can read. Plus at $80 + $12 per person covers multiple states, and Gusto will register new state tax accounts for you, which a Rippling reviewer said they had to do themselves. Watch out: tax filing errors are Gusto's most common complaint. Compare them in Gusto vs Rippling.

Who should stay on Rippling
- Teams that use the IT side. If Rippling provisions laptops and app accounts when you hire and removes them when people leave, none of the payroll providers in our research does that.
- Companies hiring abroad. Rippling says it pays employees in 185+ countries through its own entities and EOR. Keeping one system can be worth the higher bill.
- Employers happy with service. Rippling's 4.5 Trustpilot rating from 2,548 reviews is the highest of any quote-only payroll vendor in our research. If your complaint is only price, ask for a requote with fewer modules before you leave.

Moving payroll off Rippling in the middle of the year
- Find your term and notice period in the order form. Rippling publishes no cancellation terms, and its terms page returned an error when we checked, so your signed order form is the only source. Note the renewal date and any notice deadline.
- Export payroll history for the whole year. Ask in writing for payroll registers, tax liability reports, filed Forms 941 and every state wage report, per employee and per quarter. Rippling does not publish how long you keep access after leaving.
- Switch at the start of a quarter if possible. Each Form 941 then has one filer. For Q4 2026 the return is due February 1, 2027; W-2s and W-3 are due the same day. A mid-quarter switch means the new provider must load each Rippling paycheck from that quarter.
- Carry year-to-date totals forward. On your own EIN, the 2026 Social Security wage base ($184,500) and the $7,000 FUTA base keep running from January, so the new provider needs those totals to stop withholding at the right point.
- If you are on Rippling PEO, ask how wages were reported. The rule that keeps wage bases from restarting when you leave a PEO mid-year applies to certified PEOs, and Rippling PEO was not found under the Rippling name on the IRS active CPEO list (August 7, 2026). Ask Rippling in writing which EIN reported your wages and who files the 2026 W-2s.
- Hand state account numbers to the new provider. You likely registered state accounts yourself, so collect the numbers and confirm the new provider files each quarterly wage report. Missed reports can raise your unemployment rate sharply; check ranges in 2026 SUTA rates.
- Plan the HR and IT handoff. If Rippling holds employee documents, benefits enrollment or device management, move those before the payroll cutover so new hires are not stuck between systems.
