The best-scoring Gusto alternative is Patriot Software, which ties Gusto at 69 out of 100 in our October 2026 scores and charges $37 a month plus $5 per worker for Full Service, according to its pricing page (checked October 16, 2026), against $49 plus $6 per person for Gusto Simple. For 10 employees that is $87 a month instead of $109.
If you are on Gusto Plus only to pay people in a second state, OnPay (67) includes multi-state payroll at $49 plus $6 per worker.

Those are Gusto's list prices on its pricing page (checked October 16, 2026). Contractors are billed at your plan's per-person rate in the months you pay them; there is no separate contractor-only plan on the page. On Simple, the add-ons that most often push the bill up are next-day direct deposit ($15 a month + $3 per person), same-day pay ($90 per payroll), instant pay ($100 per payroll), Priority Support ($30 a month + $3 per person) and Business Compliance ($85 a month per state on an annual contract).
Before you shop, work out what you actually pay. A 10-person team on Simple pays $49 + 10 x $6 = $109 a month; the same team on Plus pays $80 + 10 x $12 = $200. If you moved to Plus only for a second state, that $91 gap is the number most alternatives can close. The plan-by-plan detail is in Gusto pricing for 2026.
Why people leave Gusto
Gusto has one of the widest rating gaps in our research: 4.6 on G2 from 13,492 reviews and 1.9 on Trustpilot from 2,535 reviews (both seen October 16, 2026). The Trustpilot complaints cluster around taxes and leaving:
| Reason | How often | What reviewers report |
|---|---|---|
| Tax filing errors, penalties left to the customer | Very common | Owners describe penalties, interest and fees from Gusto filing mistakes that Gusto would not pay (Trustpilot, Oct 2, Sep 22 and Sep 10, 2026; an older G2 discussion raises the same issue) |
| Payroll blocked or locked | Several | A payroll blocked for insufficient funds after the deadline with the fee not waived, and a system that stops you correcting your own payroll (Sep 27 and Oct 10, 2026) |
| Hard to cancel, records withheld | Several | Reviewers say canceling was made very hard and that W-2s and payroll reports were held back after leaving (Jun 3, Sep 17 and Sep 18, 2026) |
| Multi-state mistakes when people move | Several | Two employees moving from Utah to Massachusetts, and a former work location still on reports (Jun 10 and Oct 6, 2026) |
| Support takes many contacts | Several | One owner says it takes at least five calls to resolve anything (Sep 21, 2026; also Sep 2, 2026) |
| Price changes and add-on charges | Older or once | A 2017 commenter said Gusto doubled its prices and they were looking at OnPay (Hacker News); a 2025 commenter says the R&D credit payroll offset was billed from April at $328.59 a month without clear disclosure (Hacker News) |

The terms explain why tax complaints sting. Gusto's payroll terms (Sec. 11) reimburse penalties that arise directly from Gusto's late remittance, but do not name interest, and only if you told Gusto about the agency notice at least 30 days before the response date. Tax notice cases get a specialist in 4 to 6 weeks, or 1 week with Priority Support (Gusto support page). Errors in final filings after you leave are excluded.
Gusto alternatives ranked by score
Gusto ties for first in our payroll scores, so most alternatives score lower overall. They can still beat Gusto on the one thing that made you look: price, a second state, cancellation terms or support. Here is every scored provider except Gusto, with what you trade. Scoring rules are in our scoring method.
| Provider | Score | Published price (monthly) | Fee model | What you gain over Gusto | What you lose |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Patriot Software | 69 | $37 + $5 per worker (Full Service) | Base + per worker paid | $22 a month less than Simple at 10 people; on canceling you pay only for the days used, not a full month | State registration help, published support hours, guarantee terms (Patriot's are unpublished) |
| 2. OnPay | 67 | $49 + $6 per worker | One plan, base + per worker | Multi-state and local filing at the Simple price ($109 for 10 vs $200 on Plus); penalty reimbursement with no notice deadline | Self-serve canceling: OnPay needs 30 days' written notice |
| 3. Wave Payroll | 64 | $40 + $6 per employee + $6 per contractor | Base + per person paid | $100 a month for 10 and free Wave accounting | Phone support and access to payroll data after the month you cancel |
| 4. SurePayroll | 56 | $29 or $39 + $7 per worker | Base + per worker | Phone support to 7pm CT on weekdays; a household (nanny) plan | One clear price (the page shows two bases); free year-end forms |
| 5. Square Payroll | 55 | $35 + $6 per person | Base + per person paid | $95 for 10; a contractor-only plan at $6 per person with no base fee | Published exit terms and multi-state detail |
| 6. QuickBooks Payroll | 52 | $88 + $6.50 per employee | Base (with accounting) + per employee | Accounting and payroll in one product; penalty and interest cover up to $25,000 a year on Elite | $44 more a month at 10 people; you register in new states yourself |
| 7. Justworks Payroll | 42 | $50 + $8 per employee | Base + per employee | An upgrade path to a PEO with group health benefits | Any published tax guarantee |
| 8. ADP RUN | 32 | Quote only (estimate $79 + $4) | Quote | A guarantee that also covers interest when ADP held your tax money; a phone line | Published prices and self-serve canceling (30 days' written notice) |
| 9. Paychex Flex | 25 | Quote only | Quote | An assigned payroll specialist | Published prices; you register state accounts yourself |
| 10. Rippling | 21 | Quote only (from $8 per employee + a base fee) | Modules + base | IT, device and app management in the same system | Published prices and terms |

Monthly cost against Gusto for 5, 10 and 25 people
Gusto's two common plans are the first rows, so you can read the saving across. Every figure is the base fee plus the per-person fee, one state, no add-ons. Your employer taxes do not change with the provider; model them in the employee cost calculator.
| Plan | Price formula | 5 people | 10 people | 25 people |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gusto Simple (your baseline) | $49 + $6 x people | $79 | $109 | $199 |
| Gusto Plus (multi-state baseline) | $80 + $12 x people | $140 | $200 | $380 |
| Patriot Full Service | $37 + $5 x workers | $62 | $87 | $162 |
| Square Payroll | $35 + $6 x people | $65 | $95 | $185 |
| Wave Payroll | $40 + $6 x employees | $70 | $100 | $190 |
| OnPay (multi-state included) | $49 + $6 x workers | $79 | $109 | $199 |
| SurePayroll (higher $39 base) | $39 + $7 x workers | $74 | $109 | $214 |

| QuickBooks Workforce Payroll + Simple Start | $88 + $6.50 x employees | $120.50 | $153 | $250.50 |
| ADP RUN Essential (estimate) | $79 + $4 x employees | $99 | $119 | $179 |

Two readings matter. On one state, Patriot saves $22 a month at 10 people and $37 at 25. With employees in two or more states, OnPay at $109 replaces Gusto Plus at $200 for 10 people, a $91 monthly difference, though you lose Plus's time tracking (OnPay sells it as a $15 + $4 per worker add-on). Patriot's extra states cost $12 a month each. More on full payroll budgets in how much payroll costs.
Three Gusto alternatives worth a trial
Patriot Software
Patriot ties Gusto at 69 with a different shape: it wins on price (Full Service $37 + $5 per worker) and on exit terms, and loses on tax filing detail. When you cancel, Patriot bills only for the days your account was active and keeps your reports, 941s, W-2s and 1099s downloadable; workers keep lifetime access. Its Trustpilot rating is 4.7 from 3,446 reviews, against Gusto's 1.9. Read the Patriot review for its plan limits.

OnPay
OnPay sells one plan at Gusto Simple's price with multi-state payroll, local filings, W-2s and 1099s included, and data migration at no charge. Its terms reimburse penalties caused by OnPay's negligent errors without a notice deadline, while Gusto requires notice 30 days before the agency deadline. Reviewers report switching to OnPay from Gusto and QuickBooks (Trustpilot, May 2026). Watch out: corrected W-2s have taken months for some customers. Wave Payroll
$40 a month plus $6 per active employee and $6 per contractor paid, with Wave's free accounting alongside. Taxes are filed in all 50 states at the same price, and the first 30 days after your first payroll are commitment-free. Watch out: there is no phone support, and you lose access to payroll data at the end of the month you cancel, so export first. See the Wave Payroll review.

What Gusto does that the alternatives do not
Check this list before you switch. If you rely on any of these, the cheaper plan may cost you more in time.
- State tax registration done for you. Gusto is the only provider in our research that registers new state withholding and unemployment accounts, either once through Middesk (price varies by state) or through Business Compliance at $85 per state per month. Paychex and QuickBooks make you register yourself; the rest do not say.
- Weekend support hours. Gusto publishes chat and callback hours Monday to Friday 5am to 5pm PT and weekend chat 5am to 3pm PT. Most alternatives publish no hours at all.
- Faster pay options. Next-day, same-day and instant pay are priced add-ons or plan features.
- Records after you leave. Admins keep read-only access to forms, reports and past payrolls with no stated end date, and employees keep lifetime access to their forms. Only Patriot matches that in writing.
If all-in-one HR is the draw, compare Gusto vs Rippling; if you keep books in QuickBooks, Gusto vs QuickBooks Payroll.
Leaving Gusto mid-year: the exit checklist
- Time the cancel date. Cancellation takes effect immediately, but Gusto bills the full month if you cancel after the 5th or have already run payroll that month, with no proration. Run your last Gusto payroll, then cancel early in the next month.
- Decide who files the final returns. If Gusto files your final federal and state returns, it charges $100 for federal, $100 per state and $5 per W-2 or 1099. Its tax guarantee excludes errors in final filings after termination, so many owners let the new provider file the full year instead.
- Load every 2026 paycheck into the new provider. The Social Security wage base ($184,500 in 2026) and the $7,000 FUTA base keep counting for your EIN. The new provider needs year-to-date totals per employee, and every payroll from the current quarter if you switch mid-quarter, so its Form 941 covers the whole quarter. The Q4 2026 941 and the 2026 W-2s are both due February 1, 2027.
- Download records even though you keep access. Gusto says admins keep read-only access, but reviewers report W-2s and reports held back after leaving. Save payroll registers, tax filings and state wage reports for each quarter now.
- Collect your state account numbers. If Gusto registered state withholding or unemployment accounts for you, get every account number and agency login. Business Compliance runs on a 12-month commitment per state, so check its end date before you drop it.
- Confirm the first quarterly wage reports with the new provider. A missed state wage report after a switch is how one owner saw an unemployment rate go from 0.8% to 12.75% (Hacker News, Aug 17, 2026). State rate ranges are in 2026 SUTA rates.
