Employer of record in Guatemala: costs and rules for 2026

A Guatemalan employee on Q22,000 a month costs the employer 29.34% on top of the 12-month base, Q77,448.80 a year, and the biggest part is not a tax: it is the aguinaldo and Bono 14, two extra monthly salaries the Ministry of Labor (MINTRAB) requires, with IGSS social security at 10.67% the largest contribution. Your EOR then charges $199 (Payoneer Workforce Management (formerly Skuad)) up to $699 (Oyster) per person each month, based on October 2026 pricing pages. The usual US mistake is quoting an annual salary and dividing it by 12. In Guatemala pay comes in 14 installments, so a Q308,000 package means Q22,000 a month, not Q25,667.
An employer of record in Guatemala is a Guatemalan company that formally employs your worker, pays the aguinaldo and Bono 14 and remits IGSS, IRTRA and INTECAP contributions, while you direct the job.

Fourteen salaries and a fixed bonus
Guatemala's cost structure is built around mandatory bonuses rather than a high contribution rate. MINTRAB lists three:
- Aguinaldo (Decreto 76-78): one month of ordinary pay for the year running December 1 to November 30, paid in December. The law lets you pay 50% in December and 50% in January.
- Bono 14 (Decreto 42-92): another month of ordinary pay for July 1 to June 30, based on the last 12 months' average.
- Incentive bonus (Decreto 37-2001): Q250 a month on top of salary.
Contributions total 12.67% according to Deloitte. IGSS is 10.67% (IGSS service portfolio 2025); our data assigns the other 2 points to IRTRA and INTECAP at 1% each, a split inferred from Deloitte's total. IGSS states no ceiling. The employee pays 4.83% to the IGSS.
Minimum wages differ by zone and sector. In the Department of Guatemala, non-farm work pays Q131.58 a day, Q4,002.28 a month, plus the Q250 incentive bonus (Q4,252.28). In the rest of the country non-farm work is Q3,816.90 a month plus Q250. Farm and maquila rates are lower. The MINTRAB page does not name the 2026 acuerdo or its effective date.
Guatemala's leave, holiday count, probation, notice, pay frequency and dismissal compensation are not yet confirmed from an official source in our data. Before you sign, ask the EOR how it budgets for dismissal pay, and check the terms with MINTRAB.

Q308,000 a year: the worked example
The sample package is Q308,000 a year, paid as Q22,000 x 14. countries.csv puts that at about USD 40,000 using an assumed 7.70 GTQ per USD (the rate was not fetched).
| Line | Basis | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| Base salary, 12 months | Q22,000 x 12 | Q264,000 |
| Aguinaldo (December) | one month | Q22,000 |
| Bono 14 (July) | one month | Q22,000 |
| IGSS social security | 10.67% of Q264,000 | Q28,168.80 |
| IRTRA | 1% of Q264,000 | Q2,640.00 |
| INTECAP | 1% of Q264,000 | Q2,640.00 |
| Employer cost before incentive bonus and fee | Q341,448.80 | |
| Incentive bonus (Decreto 37-2001) | Q250 x 12 | Q3,000.00 |
| EOR fee at $599 a month | $599 x 12 | $7,188 |
Source: Ministry of Labor (MINTRAB) pages for aguinaldo, Bono 14 and the incentive bonus; Deloitte Guatemala Highlights 2026 for the 12.67% employer total; the $599 row is the Deel and Remote list price on Oct 16, 2026. The fee stays in USD because the GTQ rate was not read from an official source.
Line by line: 10.67% x Q264,000 = Q28,168.80, and IRTRA and INTECAP are Q2,640 each, for Q33,448.80 (12.67%). Following countries.csv, contributions are charged on the 12-month base and not on the two bonuses. Adding aguinaldo and Bono 14 (Q44,000) gives Q77,448.80, which is 29.34% of Q264,000. The Q250 incentive bonus adds Q3,000 a year and lifts the on-cost to Q80,448.80, or 30.47%; whether the Q250 sits inside or on top of the Q22,000 depends on how the contract is written, so ask.
The provider fee is a separate dollar bill: $7,188 a year at $599, $2,388 at $199 (Payoneer WFM), $4,788 at $399 (Pebl, Playroll) and $8,388 at $699 (Oyster). Dismissal pay is not in the table. Try your own figures in the international hiring cost calculator.
Which EOR for a Guatemala hire
Multiplier, at 79, and Oyster, at 64, are the two best performers in our scoring. In a country where two bonus months land in July and December, on-time pay is the thing to test. Oyster reviewers on Trustpilot describe held wages (July 29, 2026) and a SWIFT payment about 20 days late (April 2, 2026); Remote's visible reviews include praise for on-time pay, though we could not check its low-star reviews. Ask each provider for its Guatemala pay date and how it funds the aguinaldo.
Read the Oyster review, Remote review and Deel review, or the best EOR comparison.
Contractors in Guatemala
A Guatemalan contractor paid Q22,000 a month carries no aguinaldo, no Bono 14 and no IGSS, which saves Q77,448.80 a year against the employee in the table. That gap is also the exposure: a full-time contractor who works only for you may be treated as an employee, and the back pay includes both bonus months. Use a contractor management tool for real project work, or a contractor of record if you want the classification risk shared.
A Guatemalan entity versus an EOR
Your own company means IGSS registration, bonus accruals and a local payroll provider. At $599 a month, three hires cost $21,564 a year in EOR fees. If you plan to grow past that, our entity versus EOR guide lays out the trade. Nearby markets to compare are El Salvador and Honduras.
