The average monthly salary in Guatemala's formal sector was Q4,045.80 in 2025, according to the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (MINTRAB) Informe del Empleador 2025, published September 2026. That is about $530 a month at the US Treasury rate of September 30, 2026 (Q7.635 per dollar). Because the law adds an aguinaldo, a Bono 14 and a Q250 monthly incentive bonus, a worker at that salary costs an employer about Q65,792 a year by our estimate, not the Q48,549.60 that twelve paychecks suggest.

The average salary in Guatemala in MINTRAB's employer report is a trimmed mean of base monthly pay in formal jobs reported by employers.

A trimmed mean of formal jobs

MINTRAB built the Q4,045.80 from 1,789,986 positions reported by employers. Each is a job, not necessarily a separate person, and informal work is not in it. Before averaging, MINTRAB dropped values below the 5th percentile and above the 95th in each breakdown, so the top earners that inflate most means are cut out.

The figure is also close to base pay. It excludes the incentive bonus, Bono 14, the aguinaldo, commissions and other extra payments. Those definitions explain why the average lands just Q43.52 above the non-agricultural minimum wage for the Department of Guatemala, Q4,002.28 a month.

Capital against the regions, mining against farms

By activity, extraterritorial organizations topped the list at Q9,803.90, followed by mining and quarrying at Q6,488.20 and electricity, gas and steam at Q5,691.10. Minimum wages split the same way: two economic districts, with separate rates for non-agricultural, agricultural and export and maquila work. The Guatemala minimum wage page lists them all.

Full employer cost at the average salary

Three costs sit on top of base pay. Social security and training levies come to 12.67%: IGSS at 10.67% (IGSS service portfolio 2025) plus IRTRA and INTECAP. The 1% each for IRTRA and INTECAP is implied by Deloitte's 12.67% total, a secondary source we could not confirm with either body. The aguinaldo and Bono 14 are each one month's ordinary pay a year (MINTRAB). And the incentive bonus is Q250 a month (Decreto 37-2001).

  • Base pay, 12 x Q4,045.80: Q48,549.60
  • Aguinaldo and Bono 14: Q8,091.60
  • Incentive bonus, 12 x Q250: Q3,000
  • IGSS, IRTRA and INTECAP at 12.67% of base (2 points from Deloitte): Q6,151.23
  • Total: Q65,792.43 a year, about $8,617

That is 35.5% above base pay, before any reserve for severance on dismissal. The international cost calculator runs other salaries.

Hiring in Guatemala without a local entity

An employer of record pays the bonuses on schedule and files with IGSS. Expect to pay from $99 (Native Teams, whose help center says EUR 99) up to $699 (Oyster) per worker monthly, going by list prices checked October 16 and 18, 2026. Deel's $599 a month is $7,188 a year, more than 80% of the employment cost of an average worker, so ask about pricing for lower-paid roles.
