An employer paying the median adds EUR 11,516.06 in social insurance at the 21.30% employer share, before accident insurance and the U1 and U2 levies.

How Destatis measures German pay
The EUR 54,066 figure comes from the 2025 earnings survey (Verdiensterhebung). It covers full-time employees and includes taxable one-off payments, so a 13th-month Christmas bonus is in the number. Jobs held for seven months or more are scaled up to a full year. It is gross: income tax and the employee's roughly 21.15% social insurance share come off before pay reaches the account. Spread across 12 months, the median is EUR 4,505.50 a month.
The lowest-paid 10% of full-time employees earned EUR 33,828 or less and the top 10% EUR 100,719 or more. The mean of EUR 64,441 is 19% above the median, so quoting the mean as the "average German salary" overstates what a typical full-time worker makes.
This is pay per employee, not per household; the release has no household income figure and we do not derive one.

East, west and sector gaps
The gap between east and west is still large. The full-time median in the western states was EUR 55,435 and in the eastern states, excluding Berlin, EUR 46,013, a difference of EUR 9,422; eastern pay is 83% of western. The release gives no figures for individual states or cities such as Munich or Berlin.
By sector, energy supply had the highest median at EUR 77,522, closely followed by finance and insurance at EUR 76,594. The lowest were agriculture, forestry and fishing at EUR 35,689 and hospitality at EUR 35,545, less than half the top.
Employer cost of a EUR 54,066 hire
The 2026 employer share totals 21.30%: pension 9.3%, unemployment 1.3%, health 7.3% plus half of the average additional rate (about 1.45%), long-term care 1.8% and the insolvency levy 0.15%. EUR 54,066 is below the 2026 health and care ceiling of EUR 69,750 a year and the pension ceiling of EUR 101,400, so every euro is charged:
- Salary: EUR 54,066
- Employer social insurance at 21.30%: EUR 11,516.06
- Total: EUR 65,582.06 a year
Add accident insurance with the trade association (Berufsgenossenschaft), set by sector, and the U1 and U2 levies set by each health fund; neither is in the 21.30%. The Germany employer of record page covers notice periods and dismissal rules.
If an employer of record (EOR) employs the person for you, budget its fee too. Published list prices on October 16, 2026 started at $99 a month (Native Teams, whose help center says EUR 99) and topped out at $699 (Oyster), with Deel at $599. Compare the full set in the EOR pricing guide.
The median against the EUR 13.90 minimum wage
Germany's statutory minimum wage is EUR 13.90 an hour from January 1, 2026. At a 40-hour week, that is EUR 13.90 x 40 x 52 = EUR 28,912 a year, so the 2025 median is 1.87 times a full-time salary at the 2026 minimum. The German minimum wage page lists exceptions, and German leave rules cover sick pay and parental leave.
