The average gross salary in France's private sector was EUR 3,602 a month in full-time equivalent terms in 2024, according to INSEE (Insee Première no. 2079, October 23, 2025), the latest edition. That is about $4,053 a month at the European Central Bank rate of October 16, 2026. In net terms the average was EUR 2,733 a month and the net median EUR 2,190. An employer adds roughly 31.79% in listed 2026 contributions on top of gross pay, about EUR 1,145 a month on the average salary, before reductions and some smaller levies.

Gross, net and median: three French figures
French pay is quoted two ways. Brut (gross) is the contract salary before employee contributions; net is what lands in the account before income tax withholding. INSEE's 2024 numbers:
- Mean gross: EUR 3,602 a month
- Mean net: EUR 2,733 a month
- Median net: EUR 2,190 a month, or EUR 26,280 over 12 months
The net mean sits about 25% above the net median, the usual sign of a long tail of high earners. The scope is the private sector in full-time equivalent, including apprentices, interns and subsidized contracts, but excluding agriculture, household employers and the public sector. INSEE warns that 2024 is not comparable with earlier editions because the scope changed, so a year-on-year change computed from older releases would mislead.
By broad sector, industry averaged EUR 4,063 gross a month, services EUR 3,552 and construction EUR 3,142. The release we read gives no regional figures, so we do not quote a Paris average.

| Construction | EUR 3,142 | about $3,536 |

Employer contributions on EUR 3,602
The listed 2026 rates on a salary below the social security ceiling (PASS, EUR 4,005 a month) add up to about 31.79%: health 7% (at pay up to 2.396 times the SMIC), old-age 8.55% capped plus 2.11% uncapped, family 3.45%, unemployment 4%, and Agirc-Arrco pension tier 1 at 4.72% plus 1.29%, among others. That total uses 0.016% for the social dialogue contribution, the long-standing rate; the Cleiss summary we read shows 0.16%, which would add 0.144 points. EUR 3,602 is under both the PASS and the 2.396 SMIC line of about EUR 4,473, so the same stack applies:
- Gross salary: EUR 3,602 a month (EUR 43,224 a year)
- Employer contributions at 31.79%: EUR 1,145.08 a month (EUR 13,740.91 a year)
- Total: EUR 4,747.08 a month (EUR 56,964.91 a year)
That excludes work-accident insurance (AT/MP, set by risk), the training levy, apprenticeship tax, transport levy and the employer share of the mandatory health plan, and it is before the general reduction (RGDU), which cuts charges near the minimum wage. Our France employer of record breakdown lists each line.
Hiring without a French entity means an employer of record (EOR). List fees checked October 16, 2026 run from $99 a month (Native Teams, whose help center says EUR 99) to $699 (Oyster); Deel lists $599. The employer cost index shows how France compares.
The average salary next to the SMIC
The SMIC is EUR 12.31 gross an hour under the arrêté of May 22, 2026 (in force from June 1, 2026 by our records; the Service-Public page does not print the date), or EUR 1,867.02 a month on the legal 35-hour week (12.31 x 151.67 hours). The 2024 average of EUR 3,602 is 1.93 times the current SMIC. The French minimum wage page covers the calculation and the January revaluation. For time off, see leave and holidays in France.
