SurePayroll review: pricing, fees and what the page gets wrong
We may earn a commission when you sign up through some links on this page. Commissions never change our scores or the order of our lists. How we make money.
SurePayroll costs $39 a month plus $7 per worker on its Small Business plan, according to the "Starting at $39/month" line on its pricing page, but the price calculator on the same page uses a $29 base (checked October 16, 2026). For 10 employees that is $109 or $99 a month, plus $50 and $5 per form for W-2s and 1099s every year.
SurePayroll is the Paychex-owned payroll company for small businesses and household employers. It publishes its add-ons and its support hours, and you can cancel online. What it does not publish in readable form are its tax guarantee terms and how long you keep access to your records after you leave.
SurePayroll is a Paychex-owned online payroll service for small businesses and household employers, sold as a Small Business plan and a Nanny & Household plan with published monthly prices.

SurePayroll is the small business and household payroll service owned by Paychex. It sells two plans online: Small Business and Nanny & Household. The base price is low, but four extras sit outside it: year-end forms, multi-state payroll, local tax areas and an accounting integration. Our score follows our published scoring method. We compare published prices, terms and documented complaints; we did not open an account or run payroll.
SurePayroll plans and prices
| Plan | Base per month | Per worker | What the page says |

| Nanny & Household | $39, with $45 shown beside it | One employee included | Supports W-2 employees and 1099 contractors. Lists state tax ID registration help. |

|---|---|
| Multi-state payroll | $9.99/mo |

What SurePayroll costs for 5, 10 and 25 employees
Because the page shows two base prices, every figure below is worked out both ways. We score the higher one.
| Base used | 5 workers | 10 workers | 25 workers |
|---|---|---|---|
| $39 headline base | $39 + (5 × $7) = $74 | $39 + (10 × $7) = $109 | $39 + (25 × $7) = $214 |
| $29 calculator base | $29 + (5 × $7) = $64 | $29 + (10 × $7) = $99 | $29 + (25 × $7) = $204 |
Source: SurePayroll pricing page, checked Oct 16, 2026. Our arithmetic. One state, no add-ons, payroll taxes not included.
| Item | 5 workers | 10 workers | 25 workers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 months at the $39 base | 12 × $74 = $888 | 12 × $109 = $1,308 | 12 × $214 = $2,568 |
| W-2s ($50 + $5 per form) | $50 + (5 × $5) = $75 | $50 + (10 × $5) = $100 | $50 + (25 × $5) = $175 |
| Year total, $39 base | $963 | $1,408 | $2,743 |
| Year total, $29 base | $768 + $75 = $843 | $1,188 + $100 = $1,288 | $2,448 + $175 = $2,623 |
Source: SurePayroll pricing page, checked Oct 16, 2026. Our arithmetic. Add $9.99 × 12 = $119.88 a year for multi-state payroll and $4.99 × 12 = $59.88 for the accounting integration.
With the promo: the page offers six free months in the first year (see the inconsistencies below). If all six months waive the full monthly fee, 10 workers at the $39 base would pay 6 × $109 = $654 plus $100 for W-2s, or $754 for the first year. The page does not say whether the free months cover the per-worker fee or the add-ons, and the promo requires a service agreement, so treat $754 as a best case.
How that compares at 10 employees, using each provider's cheapest plan that files taxes, list price, one state:
Figures from each provider's pricing page, checked October 16, 2026: base plus 10 × the per-person fee. SurePayroll is mid-pack on the monthly fee, and the $100 a year for W-2s puts it behind OnPay, which includes W-2s and 1099s at no added cost. Full figures are on what payroll services cost.
Fees that are easy to miss
- Year-end forms. $50 plus $5 per W-2 or 1099-NEC, billed once a year. A business with 10 employees and 4 contractors pays $50 + (14 × $5) = $120 a year.
- A second state. Multi-state payroll is $9.99 a month. Only the first state is in the base price.
- Local taxes. Local tax areas cost extra and the page gives no amount. If you have staff in a city or school district with its own payroll tax, ask before you sign. Our guide to city, county and school district payroll taxes lists the local wage taxes we track.
- Accounting sync. $4.99 a month to connect your accounting software.
- State registration. The Small Business plan does not list state tax account registration. The Nanny & Household plan lists "State tax ID registration assistance", which is help, not registration done for you.
Those are SurePayroll's published extras. Its parent, Paychex, draws very common complaints about fees for almost every action on Paychex Flex, but those reviews are about a different product and we have not found the same pattern documented for SurePayroll.
Tax filing guarantee
SurePayroll has a page titled "No Penalty Tax Filing Guarantee" at surepayroll.com/about/tax-filing-guarantee. When our research read it on October 16, 2026, the page did not show the guarantee terms, so we cannot tell you whether SurePayroll pays penalties, interest or both, what notice it needs, or whether there is a cap.
Ask SurePayroll for the guarantee terms in writing before your first payroll: what it pays, whether interest is included, the deadline for forwarding an IRS or state notice, and what it excludes. Tax errors with penalties left to the customer are among the most common payroll complaints we found across providers.
Published terms elsewhere, for comparison: OnPay's terms reimburse penalties from its negligent errors with no notice deadline; Gusto pays penalties if you forward the notice at least 30 days before the agency's deadline; Wave pays when it is at fault, but you pay first and send proof. None names interest for its own errors. Details are on our OnPay review, Gusto pricing and our Wave Payroll review.
Contract, cancellation and W-2 access after you leave
- Contract: the pricing page says "No commitment, you can cancel anytime." The October 2026 free-months promo, however, requires a service agreement, and the page does not say what happens to the free months if you leave early.
- Setup fee: none mentioned.
- How to cancel: SurePayroll's legal page says you can cancel "at any time" from Company, then Subscription, then Cancel Subscription. No written notice is mentioned.
- Records after you cancel: not stated. We found nothing on how long you or your employees can still log in for pay stubs, W-2s or tax filings.
- Download every payroll register, quarterly Form 941 and state return, and each employee's year-to-date totals before you cancel.
- If you leave mid-year, agree in writing who files the current quarter's returns and the year's W-2s. The 2026 W-2s are due February 1, 2027.
- Give your new provider exact year-to-date wages so Social Security withholding stops at the 2026 wage base of $184,500.
- File any zero-wage quarterly reports a state still expects. One owner on Hacker News said a missed wage report after a switch moved their unemployment rate from 0.8% to 12.75% (August 2026). Our 2026 SUTA rates table shows what your state charges new employers.
- Cancel inside the app and keep the confirmation.
SurePayroll support
SurePayroll publishes its hours, which many payroll providers do not. Customer support is by phone and chat, Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm Central, at (877) 367-0966 (press 3). After-hours calls are returned the next business day, according to its contact page. There is no weekend live support listed, so a Friday evening payroll problem waits until Monday.
What SurePayroll customers say
SurePayroll has 4.4 out of 5 from 533 reviews on G2 and 3.6 out of 5 from 1,851 reviews on Trustpilot (both seen October 16, 2026). For context, OnPay has 3.8 on Trustpilot, Wave 3.2 and Gusto 1.9.
We have not documented recurring SurePayroll complaints from individual reviews yet; its reviews were not read in this research pass, so we do not describe any pattern. The risks we can point to come from SurePayroll's own pages: an unreadable guarantee, no stated record access after you leave, and year-end fees on top of the monthly price.
Inconsistencies on SurePayroll's own pricing page
We report these as found on October 16, 2026. Check the live page and get your price in writing.
- Two base prices. The Small Business plan says "Starting at $39/month", while the price calculator on the same page uses $29. The per-worker fee is $7 either way. At 10 workers that is a $10 a month difference ($109 or $99).
- Two promos. One line says "Then get 6 months FREE"; another says "every alternating month will be free" in the first 12 months. Both point to six free months, but one implies a block and the other every other month. Terms apply and a service agreement is required.
- "No commitment" and a service agreement. The page says you can cancel anytime, but the promo needs a signed agreement.
- Household price. The Nanny & Household plan shows $39 with $45 beside it, with no label saying which applies.
Older figures still circulate. CNBC Select's payroll list (updated June 2, 2026) shows SurePayroll at $19.99 plus $4 and $29.99 plus $5, neither of which matches SurePayroll's page today.
How we score SurePayroll
SurePayroll scores 56 out of 100, fifth of the 15 payroll providers we score: behind Patriot (69), Gusto (69), OnPay (67) and Wave (64), and just ahead of Square (55). It loses most points on the unreadable guarantee, the paid add-ons and the missing record-access terms.
| Criterion | Points | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Price transparency and cost for 10 employees | 21 of 25 | Two base prices on one page (8 of 10); at the higher $39 base, 10 employees cost $39 + 10 × $7 = $109 a month (13 of 15). |
| Tax filing coverage and guarantee | 7 of 20 | Files for the first state, extra states and local areas cost more, coverage not stated (3 of 10); guarantee page exists but terms could not be read (4 of 10). |
| Features | 8 of 20 | 1099-NEC forms supported (4); multi-state at $9.99 a month (2); accounting integration at $4.99 a month (2); time tracking and benefits not published (0). |
| Contract and exit terms | 9 of 15 | Self-serve cancellation at any time (5); record access after canceling not stated (0); no commitment and no setup fee mentioned, but yearly form fees (4). |
| Support access | 7 of 10 | Phone and chat (4); weekday hours published (3). |
| Documented complaint patterns | 4 of 10 | Trustpilot 3.6 from 1,851 reviews (2 of 4); patterns not researched yet (2 of 6). |
