The average basic salary in Malta was EUR 2,282 gross a month in the second quarter of 2026, according to the National Statistics Office's Labor Force Survey (news release 160/2026, September 11, 2026, provisional). It is basic pay only, before tax and social security and without overtime, allowances or the statutory bonuses, so total pay is higher. An employer adds 10.3% in social security at that salary, plus EUR 512.52 a year in mandatory bonuses.

Malta's average basic salary in NSO statistics is the mean gross monthly basic pay reported by employees in the quarterly Labor Force Survey.

What EUR 2,282 includes and leaves out

The NSO figure is a mean of basic salaries reported in a household survey, and it is quarterly and provisional, so it can be revised. It leaves out overtime, allowances and bonuses, including the four statutory payments every employee gets. Malta is not an OECD member, so there is no OECD average wage to cross-check it against.

The quarterly figures move noticeably. The fourth quarter of 2025 showed EUR 2,146 a month, so Q2 2026 is 6.34% higher. Treat a single quarter as a guide, not a precise market rate. When you compare an offer with this average, compare basic pay with basic pay: a Maltese offer letter that quotes an annual package including the statutory bonuses and allowances will look EUR 512.52 higher than the same basic salary.

Pay by occupation and sector

Occupation makes a large difference in Malta's figures. Managers averaged EUR 3,657 a month in Q2 2026, while elementary occupations averaged EUR 1,412. Financial and insurance activities were the highest-paying sector at EUR 3,021. We have no regional split from the release, and we do not publish salaries by job title, because the release does not.

The average compared with the minimum wage

Malta's minimum wage is EUR 229.44 a week in 2026, or EUR 994.24 a month. The average basic salary is 2.30 times that. Even the elementary occupations average of EUR 1,412 is 1.42 times the minimum. The Malta minimum wage page has the age rates and bonus dates.

What an average salary costs an employer

Class 1 social security is charged by the week. EUR 2,282 a month is EUR 526.62 a week, which falls in Category C, where both employer and employee pay 10% and the employer adds 0.3% for the maternity fund. Your employee's own 10% is EUR 52.66 a week, deducted from pay along with income tax, so the net figure an employee sees is well below EUR 2,282.

Above EUR 559.31 a week the employer contribution is capped at EUR 55.93 plus EUR 1.68 maternity, so a manager on EUR 3,657 a month costs the same in contributions as anyone else above the cap. That cap is why the employer cost index shows Malta at 8.4% on our sample salary.
