Portage salarial: what it is and how the money works
Portage salarial (wage portage) is a French three-party arrangement: an independent consultant finds and serves clients, a portage company signs the client contract and bills it, and the consultant is paid as that company's salaried employee, with French social security. The cost of that status is French payroll, with employer contributions of 31.79% at listed 2026 rates on a EUR 35,546 salary (Cleiss, checked October 2026), plus the company's fee.
Portage salarial is a French arrangement in which a consultant's client work is billed by a portage company that employs the consultant and pays the fees out as salary.
How portage salarial works
- The consultant finds a client and agrees the work and the day rate.
- The portage company signs a commercial contract with the client and an employment contract with the consultant.
- The client pays the portage company's invoice.
- The company keeps its management fee, pays employer contributions and pays the rest to the consultant as gross salary, through French payroll.
The consultant keeps a freelancer's autonomy and gains employee status: unemployment insurance, pension contributions and a payslip a bank or landlord accepts.
Example: EUR 60,000 of billings
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Billed to clients | EUR 60,000 |
| Portage company fee (assumed 8% for this example) | EUR 4,800 |
| Left for salary and employer contributions | EUR 55,200 |
| Employer contributions at 31.79% | EUR 13,314 |
| Gross salary (55,200 / 1.3179) | EUR 41,886 |
| Employee contributions at roughly 20.8% | EUR 8,712 |
| Net salary before income tax | EUR 33,174 |
Rates: Cleiss, French social security contributions 2026, checked Oct 16, 2026. The 31.79% excludes the AT/MP accident rate, training and transport levies, the health plan share and the RGDU general reduction. The 8% fee is an assumption; fees are set in each contract.
So the consultant takes home a little over half of what the client pays, before income tax. The business model works for the portage company on volume: its fee is a share of billings, while the payroll cost passes through. Compare French salary benchmarks and the SMIC minimum wage.
Portage salarial vs EOR vs umbrella company
An employer of record in France is for a company that wants to hire and direct an employee without a French entity; the client controls the work and pays the EOR fee. Portage is driven by the consultant, who stays autonomous and brings the client. A UK umbrella company is the closest English equivalent. If you are a US company that wants a French consultant long term, compare portage with the EOR route and with a contractor of record, and read permanent establishment risk before the work grows.
French labor law has rules specific to portage, covering who may use it and a minimum pay level for portage employees. We could not confirm the current terms on an official page on October 18, 2026, so check the Code du travail or service-public.fr before you sign.
