Uruguay's national minimum wage, the Salario Mínimo Nacional (SMN), is UYU 25,383 a month, the value the Banco de Previsión Social lists for September and October 2026 (BPS, page updated October 16, 2026). That is about $630 a month at the US Treasury rate of 40.27 pesos per dollar for September 30, 2026. Employer contributions add 12.6% for pension, health and retraining, UYU 3,198.26 a month at the SMN, before the labor credit guarantee fund and any EOR fee.
The Salario Mínimo Nacional is Uruguay's national wage floor for private-sector employees, set by executive decree and also used as a reference value in social security rules.

The SMN sits under the wage councils
Most pay in Uruguay is governed by sector minimums agreed in tripartite wage councils (Consejos de Salarios), which are generally above the national floor. So the practical floor for a hire is the wage council rate for the employer's sector, with the SMN as the last backstop.
A mid-2026 adjustment
The executive usually adjusts the SMN in January and sometimes mid-year. Our earlier research recorded a lower rate for January 2026, which we could not re-confirm on an official page. If it is right, the UYU 25,383 that BPS lists for September and October points to a mid-year adjustment, but its decree and start date were not in our sources. BPS applies the value in force in the month the obligation arises.
A full year at UYU 25,383 is UYU 304,596, about $7,564. BPS lists the Base de Prestaciones y Contribuciones (BPC), a separate reference unit, at UYU 6,864 for the same months.
Employer contributions on the SMN
- Pension (aporte jubilatorio), industry and commerce: 7.5%, subject to a contribution cap
- FONASA health: 5%, plus a mutual-quota complement where it applies
- Labor retraining fund (FRL): 0.10%
Total: 12.60%. On UYU 25,383 that is UYU 3,198.26, so the monthly cost is UYU 28,581.26, about $710. The labor credit guarantee fund (FGCL) comes on top at a rate we have not confirmed.
Hiring in Uruguay through an EOR
An EOR's published fee ranges from a $99 starting price at Native Teams (its help center says EUR 99) to Oyster's $699 per employee per month (checked October 16 and 18, 2026). Deel's $599 is about 84% of the $710 monthly cost of an SMN hire, so it suits wage-council and professional salaries better. For a wage-council salary, model the real number in the calculator, then shortlist with our EOR scores and the Uruguay employer of record guide; the cost index compares the region.
