Employees in Indonesia earned an average wage of IDR 3.39 million a month in May 2026, according to the BPS Statistics Indonesia National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas) release of August 5, 2026. That is about $188 a month, a conversion via the ECB's rupiah and dollar rates for October 16, 2026. BPS's standing Sakernas definition treats this as net pay, after deductions and income tax, though the release we read does not restate it. Employers pay on gross pay, so expect BPJS contributions of 10.24% to 11.74% (Deloitte, a secondary source) of a larger number, plus a religious holiday allowance (THR) of one month's wages each year.
The average salary in Indonesia in BPS data is the mean monthly wage of employees from the Sakernas labor force survey, which BPS defines as net of mandatory deductions and income tax.

A net, survey-based average that moves by round
The figure comes from a household labor force survey, covers employees in all sectors nationwide, and is rounded to IDR 0.01 million. By BPS's usual definition it is net pay. The result moves with each survey round: IDR 3.27 million in August 2024, IDR 3.33 million in August 2025, IDR 3.29 million in February 2026 and IDR 3.39 million in May 2026. Do not compare it with gross figures from other countries without adjusting.
The February 2026 round, as reported by Bisnis.com, broke the average down. Financial and insurance activities paid IDR 5.05 million and other services about IDR 2.0 million; men averaged IDR 3.55 million and women IDR 2.80 million. Those splits are for February, not May.
Jakarta's minimum is far above the national average
BPS does not publish a Jakarta average in the release we used. The useful benchmark is the floor: Jakarta's 2026 provincial minimum wage (UMP) is IDR 5,729,876 a month, the highest of 38 provinces, from the Ministry of Manpower list as reproduced by Bisnis.com. That is 1.69 times the national net average. The lowest UMP, West Java's IDR 2,317,601, sits below it, and city and regency rates (UMK) can be higher. Most employees work outside Jakarta and many are in lower-paid sectors, which helps explain the gap, and the average is a net figure while the UMP is gross. The Indonesian minimum wage page covers the provinces.
What an employer adds
Employer BPJS contributions, from Deloitte's Indonesia Highlights 2026 (a secondary source), are:
- Work accident (JKK): 0.24% to 1.74% by risk class
- Death (JKM): 0.3%
- Old-age savings (JHT): 3.7%
- Pension (JP): 2%, on pay up to a cap
- BPJS Kesehatan health: 4%, on pay up to a cap
Below the caps that totals 10.24% to 11.74% of gross pay. Using IDR 3.39 million as a floor for gross pay, the employer adds IDR 347,136 to IDR 397,986 a month. THR, one month's wages after 12 months of service and pro rata from one month, is due at least 7 days before the religious holiday (Permenaker 6/2016). The international cost calculator handles higher salaries, where the caps start to bite.
Employing someone in Indonesia from abroad
Without an Indonesian entity, an employer of record can employ the worker for you. Price pages checked October 16, 2026 show EOR fees from $99 at Native Teams (its help center says EUR 99) to $699 at Oyster a month. Deel lists $599 a month, more than three times the average net wage, so the fee makes sense mainly for skilled hires.
The Indonesia EOR guide covers severance. Compare Malaysian salaries and Philippine salaries, or see ranked providers.
