Brazil's average usual monthly income from work was BRL 3,777 in the June to August 2026 quarter, according to IBGE's PNAD Contínua survey released September 29, 2026, up 3.7% after inflation and 8.3% in nominal terms on a year earlier. That is about $743.09 a month at the European Central Bank cross rate of October 16, 2026.
The figure covers everyone with work income, including informal workers and the self-employed, so it is a measure of what people earn, not a payroll salary. A company paying a formal employee BRL 3,777 a month spends BRL 68,388.88 a year once the 13th salary, the vacation third and employer charges are added.
Average income in PNAD Contínua is IBGE's mean of usual monthly income from all jobs for employed people aged 14 and over, measured over a rolling three-month period.

What IBGE's BRL 3,777 includes
This is a mean of usual monthly income from all jobs, so someone with two jobs counts both. It covers formal and informal employees and the self-employed, all aged 14 and over.
Three things it is not. It is not a median: IBGE's table 6390 does not publish one, so this page gives none. It is not split by state or industry in the table we used. And it is not formal-sector pay: with informal and self-employed income in the mix, what payroll employees earn can differ.
Average income against the minimum wage
BRL 3,777 is 2.33 times the 2026 minimum wage of BRL 1,621.00 a month. Over twelve months it is BRL 45,324 (our arithmetic). A formal employee on the same monthly pay receives more than that, because the 13th salary and the vacation one-third add BRL 3,777 and BRL 1,259: BRL 50,360 a year. The Brazilian minimum wage page explains both payments and the move to a 40-hour week.
The full cost of a formal employee at BRL 3,777
For a regular-regime services company with a 2% accident rate and a neutral FAP, employer charges are 35.8% of all pay including the 13th and the vacation third (charging INSS on the vacation third follows our research model and is not confirmed from an official source):
- Pay for the year: 45,324 + 3,777 + 1,259 = BRL 50,360
- INSS 20%: BRL 10,072.00
- RAT 2%: BRL 1,007.20
- Third-party contributions 5.8%: BRL 2,920.88
- FGTS 8%: BRL 4,028.80
- Total cost: BRL 68,388.88 (about $13,455), or 50.89% above the 12-month base
None of the employer charges has a salary ceiling, so the percentage holds at higher pay. Dismissal without cause adds 40% of all FGTS deposits. That is why Brazil's 50.9% sample on-cost is the highest in our employer cost index.
Using the average to price a role
Because the survey mixes informal and self-employed income with payroll jobs, it is a poor anchor for a single hire. No official job-title figures are used on this page. For a specific role, take the salary you plan to offer, then budget 13.33 payments a year (12 months, the 13th and the vacation third) and the employer charges above.
Hiring in Brazil through an employer of record
An EOR registers the employee, files the payroll reports, deposits FGTS by the 20th of each following month and pays the 13th salary. Published EOR list prices run from $99 (Native Teams, whose help center says EUR 99) to $699 (Oyster) per employee per month (checked October 16 and 18, 2026); Deel lists $599, about $7,188 a year against about $13,455 in all-in yearly cost at the average income.
The guide to hiring in Brazil covers notice and dismissal costs; ranked EOR providers and EOR price comparison help with the choice, and EOR versus a local entity covers when to set up a Brazilian company. Compare the region: average salary in Argentina.
