YTD meaning on a paycheck: what year to date shows

YTD stands for year to date: the running total of an amount from January 1 (or the start of a company's fiscal year) through the latest date. On a pay stub, it is everything paid or withheld so far this calendar year. YTD matters because some taxes stop at a yearly cap: Social Security withholding ends once 2026 wages pass $184,500 (IRS Publication 15).

YTD (year to date): the total of an amount, such as gross pay or tax withheld, from the start of the year through the current date or pay period.

What the YTD column on a pay stub shows

Most pay stubs have two columns for each line: Current (this paycheck) and YTD (every paycheck since January 1). You will see YTD totals for gross pay, each tax, each deduction and net pay. Payroll YTD runs on the calendar year even if the business uses a different fiscal year, because Forms W-2 cover January to December.

Your last stub of the year is close to your Form W-2, but box 1 wages are usually lower than YTD gross because pretax deductions, such as traditional 401(k) contributions, are left out.

Example: YTD after 20 paychecks

An employee earns $52,000 a year, paid biweekly (26 checks), with no pretax deductions. By the 20th paycheck:

YTD totals after 20 biweekly paychecks, $52,000 salary
LineCurrentYTD
Gross pay$2,000.00$40,000.00
Social Security (6.2%)$124.00$2,480.00
Medicare (1.45%)$29.00$580.00

Where YTD changes your paycheck

  • Social Security cap. On a $260,000 salary paid biweekly ($10,000 a check), YTD reaches $180,000 after 18 checks. Only $4,500 of check 19 is taxed ($279 withheld), and checks 20 to 26 have no Social Security at all, so net pay rises late in the year. Medicare has no cap. The 2027 base is $192,300 (SSA).
  • 401(k) limit. Payroll uses YTD deferrals to stop contributions at $24,500 for 2026, plus $8,000 catch-up at age 50 or older (IRS).
  • Employer wage bases. FUTA applies to the first $7,000 of YTD wages per employee, and each state has its own SUTA base. See 2026 SUTA wage bases by state.

How these taxes fit together is in what FICA covers.

When YTD numbers look wrong

A frequent cause is a mid-year change of payroll provider. The new provider has to load each employee's YTD wages and taxes from the old one, or the Social Security cap, 401(k) limit and W-2 will all be off. Ask for a YTD import and check the first stub line by line. Year-end checks are in the payroll year-end checklist, and our payroll software comparison notes which providers handle mid-year moves.

Frequently asked questions

What does YTD mean on a paycheck?
YTD means year to date. The YTD column shows the total of each line, such as gross pay, taxes and deductions, for every paycheck from January 1 through the current one.
What does YTD amount mean?
The YTD amount is a running total since the start of the year. If you earn $2,000 per biweekly check, your YTD gross pay after 20 checks is $40,000.
Is YTD gross pay before taxes?
Yes. YTD gross is total earnings before taxes and deductions. YTD net pay is what was actually paid to you after them.
When does YTD reset?
Payroll YTD resets on January 1 for wages, because W-2s and the Social Security wage base ($184,500 in 2026, $192,300 in 2027) run by calendar year. A company's financial YTD can follow its own fiscal year.
Why did my Social Security tax stop late in the year?
Your YTD Social Security wages passed the yearly cap: $184,500 for 2026 (IRS Publication 15). The 6.2% tax stops for the rest of the year and restarts in January. Medicare at 1.45% has no cap.
