WFH meaning: what WFH stands for in texts and at work

WFH stands for work from home: doing your job from your home instead of an employer's office, full time or on set days. For employers the useful fact is that payroll taxes follow where the work happens: Philadelphia withholds its 3.425% nonresident wage tax only on work done inside the city (City of Philadelphia, checked October 2026), so a WFH day can change a paycheck.

WFH (work from home) means doing your job from your own home rather than the employer's workplace.

WFH in texts and job ads

In a text or chat, "WFH today" means the sender is working from home that day. In a job ad, a WFH job is one you can do from home, though some ads still require you to live in a certain state or country. Remote means the job has no office base at all; hybrid mixes office and WFH days; telework is the term federal agencies use.

Example: what WFH days do to city wage tax

Philadelphia wage tax for a nonresident earning $60,000 (rate from July 1, 2026)
ScheduleWages earned in PhiladelphiaWage tax at 3.425%
5 days in the office$60,000$2,055
2 office days, 3 WFH days$24,000$822

Other places work the other way. St. Louis requires employers located in the city to withhold its 1% earnings tax from all employees regardless of where they work, and Oregon's 0.1% statewide transit tax applies to Oregon residents wherever they work. What changes when your staff work from home

  • New state, new accounts. An employee who lives and works in a state where you have no other staff usually means registering there for withholding and unemployment tax. Rates are in 2026 SUTA rates by state.
  • New hire report. It goes to that state within 20 days of hire, or sooner (Georgia and Vermont: 10 days).
  • Local pay rules. Minimum wage and paid leave rules generally follow the work location; check 2026 minimum wages.

A home worker in another country is a different case: you need a local entity, an employer of record or a real contractor arrangement. Published EOR list prices ran from $99 a month (Native Teams, whose help center says EUR 99) to $699 (Oyster) in October 2026; compare them in our EOR rankings. A remote staffer abroad can also create permanent establishment tax risk for your company.

Frequently asked questions

What does WFH mean in a text?
WFH in a text means working from home. "WFH today" tells the other person you are working, just not at the office.
What does WFH stand for?
WFH stands for work from home. It describes doing your job from home instead of at the employer's workplace, either full time or on certain days.
Does remote mean working from home?
Usually, but not always. A remote job has no office base, and most remote workers work from home, but some work from coworking spaces or travel. A WFH arrangement can also be part time, with office days, which is called hybrid.
What is a WFH job?
A WFH job is one you can do from home. Many still limit where you may live, because the employer has to register for payroll taxes in each state or country where its staff work.
Does working from home change my taxes?
It can. Philadelphia's 3.425% nonresident wage tax applies only to work done in the city, so WFH days lower it. Oregon's 0.1% transit tax on residents applies wherever you work.
