Average monthly earnings in South Africa were R30,611 in May 2026, according to Statistics South Africa's Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) for June 2026, released September 29, 2026. That is 2.6% more than the R29,825 of February 2026 and 4.1% more than a year earlier, and it covers formal-sector employers outside agriculture. Employer levies on that pay are small: R483.23 a month in unemployment insurance and skills levy (the levy applies once annual payroll will exceed R500,000), plus a workers' compensation assessment.
Average monthly earnings in Stats SA's QES are the mean monthly pay that formal non-agricultural employers report for their employees; the release does not say whether the figure is gross or includes bonuses.

Why R30,611 is higher than a normal salary
The QES figure is a mean. In a country with wide pay gaps, a minority of high earners pulls a mean well above what most employees take home, and the median is far lower. Stats SA's QES release does not publish a median, so we do not give one: be careful with any site that quotes a precise South African median without naming its survey.
Three other limits matter if you are pricing a role. The survey covers formal non-agricultural businesses, so farm work and informal jobs are outside it. The media release does not say whether the figure is gross or net or whether bonuses are included. And we did not read the QES industry tables, so this page has no sector breakdown. Use it as a national benchmark, not a salary for a job title.
Average earnings compared with the minimum wage
The national minimum wage is R30.23 an hour from March 1, 2026. At the 45-hour maximum ordinary week that is R5,894.85 a month, so average earnings of R30,611 are 5.19 times a full-time minimum wage. That gap shows how wide pay is in South Africa: a role priced at the average is well above entry level. See the South African minimum wage for the EPWP and sector rates.
What R30,611 a month costs an employer
South Africa's employer charges are among the lowest we track in the employer cost index:
- UIF: 1% of pay up to R17,712 a month, so the employer share stops at R177.12 a month.
- SDL: 1% of total pay with no cap, R306.11 a month at R30,611, if your annual payroll will exceed R500,000.
- COIDA: an employer-only workers' compensation assessment set by industry class.
Together UIF and SDL come to R483.23 a month, or 1.58% of pay, before COIDA. On a year of R367,332 (12 times the monthly average) that is R5,798.76. There is no statutory 13th-month payment, though many contracts include one. Run your own figure in the international employee cost calculator.
Hiring at this level through an employer of record
Because levies are low, the EOR fee is the biggest addition to an average South African salary. Published list prices run from $99 (Native Teams, whose help center says EUR 99) to $699 (Oyster) per employee per month (EOR pricing compared). Remote lists EOR from $599 a month and waives deposits and setup fees for startups (checked October 16, 2026).
Budget for exit costs as well: notice is four weeks after one year of service, and a retrenchment requires at least one week's pay per completed year. The South Africa EOR guide has the details, our EOR rankings compare providers, and Kenyan salaries and Nigerian salaries give a regional comparison.
