Rippling vs BambooHR: HR software and payroll compared
We may earn a commission when you sign up through some links on this page. Commissions never change our scores or the order of our lists. How we make money.
BambooHR publishes its prices: Core $10, Pro $17 and Elite $25 per employee per month, or a flat $250, $425 or $650 a month for teams of 25 or fewer (BambooHR pricing page, checked October 16, 2026). Rippling publishes none; its FAQ says plans "start at $8 per employee per month, with a monthly base fee" and does not say what the base fee is.
BambooHR fits a company that wants an HR system first and can treat payroll as an add-on, which is free through December 31, 2026 on a 12-month agreement and unpriced after that. Rippling fits a company that wants payroll, HR, IT and global hiring on one platform and will negotiate a quote. On our HR software scores, BambooHR (54/100) ranks above Rippling (30/100).

These two are often shortlisted together, but they start from different places. BambooHR is an HR system first: employee records, onboarding and performance, with US payroll sold as an add-on. Rippling is a platform where payroll, HR, IT, devices and global hiring are sold as modules on one employee record. The price question is different too: BambooHR posts its HR plan prices, Rippling posts none.
For the vendor detail behind this page, see BambooHR pricing and plans and what Rippling charges per module. If you are still deciding what kind of system you need, our guide to HR software for small businesses covers the wider field.
Side-by-side: prices, payroll, contract and support
BambooHR figures come from its pricing page and Rippling figures from its pricing page and FAQ, both checked October 16, 2026. Ratings were seen the same day. Scores follow our published scoring method: BambooHR earns more because it prices its plans (20 points to 5) and documents its HR records, onboarding and performance tools (18 to 3); Rippling earns most of its points on review scores (12 to 6) and its own payroll (10 each).

Source: bamboohr.com/pricing and rippling.com/pricing, checked Oct 16, 2026. BambooHR shows two per-employee rates on one page, so both are given. Rippling's $8 is a published floor with an unstated base fee; real quotes depend on modules.
Three things change these numbers.
- BambooHR's small-team floor. A 10-person company pays the same $250 a month on Core as a 25-person company. Below about 25 people the effective rate is well above the $10 headline: $250 / 10 = $25 per employee per month. We read the per-employee rates as applying from 26 employees up; confirm that on your quote.
- Rippling's base fee and modules. Rippling does not state the base fee. The only figure we found is from Forbes Advisor (January 2026), cited in Gusto's August 2, 2026 guide, which reported a $35 monthly base plus a per-employee fee from a quote. Gusto competes with Rippling, so treat it as a starting point. If that base applied, the first module for 10 people would be $35 + 10 x $8 = $115 a month (an estimate). Each added module, such as time tracking, devices or benefits, raises the per-employee total.
- Payroll on BambooHR. The payroll add-on has no published price. Through December 31, 2026 it is $0 if you sign a 12-month agreement, but implementation and multi-state fees are excluded, and the page does not say what payroll costs from January 2027. Because the agreement runs 12 months, you would be committed past the free period at a price you have not seen. Get the 2027 payroll rate in writing before signing.
Neither figure includes payroll taxes, which are usually the larger cost. A $50,000 employee carries $3,825 a year in employer Social Security and Medicare alone (7.65% x $50,000), before federal and state unemployment tax. Use our employee cost calculator to add those for your state, and our payroll service cost guide to compare what payroll-first providers charge.
Payroll is the real difference
If your main need is running payroll, neither of these is the cheapest or most transparent route. BambooHR's payroll is US-only, unpriced and sold on top of an HR plan. Rippling's payroll is part of a quote-only platform with no published tax filing guarantee, cancellation terms or support hours, which is why it scores 21/100 on our payroll scale.
The case for either is the HR side. BambooHR documents HR records, onboarding and performance tools and posts their prices. Rippling's case is breadth: the same employee record drives payroll, app access, laptops, global payroll in 185+ countries, an employer of record service and a US PEO. A company hiring abroad or managing devices for every new hire gets something BambooHR does not sell.
If you want payroll with published prices and a written penalty policy, compare the payroll-first options in our payroll software rankings. Gusto, for example, scores 69/100 on payroll and posts $49 a month plus $6 per person on its Simple plan (checked October 16, 2026); see Gusto vs Rippling for that matchup.
Choose BambooHR if
- You want an HR system first (records, onboarding, performance) and a price you can see before a sales call.
- You have 25 or fewer employees and the flat $250 Core rate fits your budget, or you have more than 25 and $10 to $25 per employee works.
- Your staff are all in the US, since BambooHR payroll covers US employees only.
- You can get BambooHR's 2027 payroll price in writing, or you plan to keep your current payroll provider and connect it through one of the 150+ integrations.

- You are prepared to negotiate, ask for the base fee and every module price in writing, and budget for growth, since the bill rises with each module and employee.

Switching between BambooHR and Rippling
Moving HR records is mostly a data export. Moving payroll is where mistakes cost money. Neither vendor publishes how long you keep access to records after you leave, so download everything before your last day.
- Read your contract term first. BambooHR offers month-to-month or an extended term, and its payroll promo needs 12 months. Rippling does not publish its terms. Ask each for the notice period and any early exit fee in writing.
- Export HR data. Employee records, job and pay history, time-off balances, signed documents and performance notes. Check that time-off balances carry over correctly before you switch off the old system.
- Switch payroll at a quarter or year boundary if you can. If you move mid-year, load each employee's year-to-date wages and taxes into the new system so Social Security stops at the 2026 wage base of $184,500 and W-2s come out right.
- Settle who files what. Agree in writing which provider files the final quarterly Form 941 and state wage reports for the quarter you switch, and who issues W-2s for the year.
- Keep your state accounts current. Missed quarterly wage reports after a switch can raise your state unemployment rate. One Hacker News commenter said their rate "went from 0.8% to 12.75%" (August 2026). Our 2026 SUTA rates by state show what new-employer rates look like.
Our guide to setting up payroll covers the registrations and first-run checks for the new system.
Documented complaints
Rippling
- Modular pricing that is hard to budget and climbs with modules and headcount (very common in recent reviews).
- Slow support on complex issues, and only administrators can reach live support.
- Setup gaps, such as state tax registrations left to the client (May 11, 2026).
- A duplicated employer health fund contribution after a change (December 29, 2025).

BambooHR
We did not research BambooHR complaint patterns in this pass, so we do not list any. Its Trustpilot score is 3.3 from 154 reviews, a small sample, and its G2 score is 4.4 from 7,705 (seen October 16, 2026). Read the most recent low-star reviews yourself before you sign, and ask about payroll support specifically, since payroll is the newer, add-on part of the product.
Other HR and payroll comparisons
Rippling also appears in Rippling vs ADP, Rippling vs Paylocity and Rippling vs Justworks. For HR suites with payroll built in, see HR and payroll software compared and HRIS software options.
Bottom line: BambooHR is the one you can price: $10 to $25 per employee, or a flat $250 to $650 a month under 26 employees, with payroll unpriced after 2026. Rippling is quote only from $8 per employee plus a base fee it does not state, and makes sense when you want payroll, IT and global hiring in one system. On our HR software scores BambooHR (54/100) ranks above Rippling (30/100), mostly because BambooHR publishes its prices and documents its HR features.
